10 Best Free Fonts for Coding & Programming

When writers choose a font, they generally do so because of the character it imparts to their text. But for coders it’s the opposite – they want a font that is generally characterless, so as not to obfuscate the massive bodies of code. Consequently, most coders prefer retro-style monospaced fonts, where each character takes up the exact same amount of horizontal space.

What follows is a round-up of the top 10 FREE readily-available fonts. Most of these fonts are bundled along with modern operating systems, but all are free for download from GraphicsJar.com

So “chose wisely”.

Enjoy!

Some of those images are not displayed at native resolution, the Monaco image particularly looks blurred because it is stretched. Also even for the ones that are displayed 1:1, if the subpixel ordering on my screen doesn’t match the subpixel ordering that the ClearType renderer assumed, then the font will look awful.

Have used many of these (especially liked Anonymous Pro) and ended up buying (my only font purchase ever) Pragmata Pro after seeing how readable (this relatively dense) programming font is…
